Tom McFarland is a New Mexico artist, who looks inside the painting, to see how lights and shadows affect the interior. Inspired by a family of blacksmithing, textiles, and woodworking, McFarland uses resin, mesh, wood, and metal, among other materials. His work with deconstructed paintings produces sculptures in the form of wall-sized three-dimensional reliefs and suspended objects.
His work is accented with ‘found objects” and ordinary items in unusual settings. The artist often uses his phone to record ideas that become ink jet transfers. He now works in New York and names his pieces after locations that have become familiar, being equally inspired by the urban surroundings of the East as well as the open light and vistas of the American Southwest.
"In these times, it’s like all of us are in bubble wrap, each separated in our own compartment. As the wrap is twisted and popped, everyone feels pushed, poked, or stabbed in the back. We don’t know why, how long it will last, or how long the healing will take. We all feel that our connections are damaged. My work gives me a reason to push forward and move on."
